What is your official title?

Emeritus Professor and Chairman, University of Colorado Medical School

How/when did you become interested in science and medicine?

In high school, I became interested in science with the help of a wonderful science teacher.

What interested you to pursue a career in medicine and medical education?

I recall our family doctor in our home town of Highmore, South Dakota, and from his example I hoped and planned to go to the University of Iowa Medical School.

Please highlight your major career achievements, awards, discoveries, etc.

I was honored with the Distinguished Professor Award from the American College of OB/GYN. I also received the Commander's Award from Fitzsimmons Army Hospital. I was the Editor of major text books in OB/GYN and for a national periodical called Survey of OB/GYN. I served as professor and chairman of OB/GYN for 29 years at the University of Colorado Medical School.

The E. Stewart Taylor Lectureship was established by the Colorado OB/GYN Society. And in l999 The E. Stewart Taylor Endowed Chair for the Department of OB/GYN was established.

Is there a teacher, mentor or UI Carver College of Medicine faculty member who has helped shape your education?

Dr. E.D. Plass, l936 Chairman of OB/GYN at the University of Iowa helped to shape my education.

How or why did you choose the University of Iowa for your education and medical training?

I chose Iowa because it was the best medical school near my home town in South Dakota.

What kind of professional opportunities or advantages has your University of Iowa medical training provided?

At Iowa I had an outstanding basic education.

What still resonates with you today about your training at Iowa?

I was trained by an excellent faculty.

Please describe your professional interests.

My professional interests are medical writing and education.

What are some of your outside interests?

I enjoy horseback riding, traveling, and collecting turn-of-the-century Medical books on women's health.

Are you involved in service to your alma mater through volunteer activities, serving as community based faculty, etc. or have you had any opportunities to work with or train UI medical students?

My Alma Mater activity is the Annual Financial drive within the Denver community.

Do you have an insight or philosophy that guides you in your professional work?

My philosophy is to give service to others.

If you could change one thing about the health care system in the United States, what would it be?

Government sponsored health care for everyone should be in the United States.

What are the biggest changes you've experienced in medicine since you were a student?

The introduction of effective antibiotics has been the biggest change in my career.

What advice would you give to today's medical students?

My one piece of advice is to serve others.

What do you see as "the future" of medicine?

Total medical coverage for the entire population should be the in the future.
